AMDSB Celebrates Education Week by Focusing on Thanking Staff and the Importance of Mental Health

May 1, 2026

May 4-10 marks Education Week and the Avon Maitland District School Board is acknowledging the week in two ways.

First, through an acknowledgement of their staff - the educators, support staff and all the individuals working behind the scenes to ensure that each student has what they need in order to succeed. Their dedication to student achievement and well-being is what keeps our system running and ensures the right support reaches each student and family.

Second, through a spotlight on mental and well-being as this week also marks Children’s Mental Health Week. Social connection is essential to overall health and well-being yet nearly 1 in 5 youth between the ages of 15–24 report feeling lonely often or always. This year's theme, Come Together, encourages staff and students to Come Together in celebration of Mental Health Week. It’s a call to spark small, everyday actions of connection, and to recognize the role we all play in supporting mental health through connection.

To show support for Children's Mental Health, AMDSB invites all staff, students, and community members to wear green on Wednesday May 6 in honour of mental health awareness.

Parents/caregivers interested in learning more about mental health topics can visit amdsb.ca/mentalhealth.

In addition, if you're interested in learning more about how technology impacts mental health, join the Huron-Perth Catholic and Avon Maitland District School Boards in welcoming author Katherine Martinko (Childhood Unplugged, The Analog Family Substack) for an in-person presentation titled, “Stronger Connections, Healthier Tech Habits: Six Guidelines for Managing Tech & Kids.” This session will explore the effects of excessive screen use on children's mental health and well-being, while offering guidelines and practical strategies for:

  • Setting healthy technology boundaries for K-12 students
  • How to support face‑to‑face interactions and meaningful connections with your children
  • Tools for talking with children about technology using simple, supportive scripts

This session will be offered in both Huron and Perth County:

  • May 5, 2026 from 7-8:30pm at St Anne’s Catholic Secondary School
  • May 25, 2026 from 7-8:30pm at St. Michael Catholic Secondary School
