French as a Second Language

Avon Maitland offers a variety of options to parents and students looking for French as a Second Language (FSL) education, offering Core French and French Immersion FSL programs. We also offer and support DELF certification with educators and students in levels A1 - B2 for those who wish to challenge.

Core French

The Avon Maitland District School Board values the Core French program which provides students the opportunity to develop a working understanding and ability to interact using a range of authentic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. We offer Core French in all of our schools. In our elementary schools instruction is provided in French for 200 minutes per five day cycle for Grades 4 - 8.  At the secondary level, we offer Core French courses in Grades 9 through 12.

 French Immersion

Grade 1 is the only entry point for French immersion unless you have attended a French immersion program elsewhere.

About French Immersion

French Immersion provides students with a pathway to achieve a high level of French fluency while maintaining and developing skills in their first language. The goal is to develop students’ proficiency in both French and English, enabling them to become functionally bilingual by the time they graduate secondary school.

In Grades 1-8, French is the language of instruction in the classroom is, at minimum, 50% of the day.

Elementary French Immersion is available at:

  1. École Anne Hathaway Public School (grades 1 to 6)
  2. École Bedford Public School (grades 1 to 6)
  3. Stratford Intermediate School (grades 7 and 8)

In Grades 9-12, students can complete either the seven (Extended Immersion) credit or the ten (French Immersion) credit with a certificate.

Secondary French Immersion is available at:

  1. Stratford District Secondary School (grades  9-12)

Diplôme d’études en langue Française (DELF)

Avon Maitland District School Board provides the opportunity for students to challenge the DELF to demonstrate French proficiency in oral communication, listening, reading and writing at any of the following levels: A1, A2, B1, B2. This opportunity is provided each spring (usually mid May).

Offering the DELF also provides teachers with the opportunity to become certified as DELF examinateurs-correcteur and/or formateurs through 4 day training, 2 day recertifications, DELF refreshers prior to the DELF and release for correcting the DELF during the testing week. This collaborative learning opportunity enables teachers to learn and apply the Common European Framework for Reference for Languages (CEFR) not only while testing, but in their classrooms as well.
