Listowel District Secondary School Grade 11 student Keira Schaefer was chosen to represent the Perth-Wellington riding for the Model Parliament for High School Students program. She was chosen based on her application that showcased her leadership, responsibility, teamwork, strong interpersonal and social skills, her interest in current affairs, provincial issues and government and her involvement in a variety of community and extra-curricular activities. She was also asked to submit a letter of recommendation, which was provided by her teacher Ms. Varillas.
According to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario website: "Young Ontarians who participate in this program will gain a stronger understanding of the province's parliamentary practices and traditions, and will benefit from an authentic experience that demonstrates the value and importance of the democratic process."
Keira reflected on her experience: "Model Parliament was an amazing experience for me. The program helped me gain a better understanding of our province’s parliamentary practices through workshops, presentations and acting as the MPP for Perth-Wellington. I was able to meet key figures in Parliament, including our MPP, Matthew Rae, observe the Legislature in session, workshop a provincial bill and participate in a mock debate in the Legislative Chamber. The program also gave me the opportunity to make new friends with students from across Ontario. I am so happy I participated in this program and would encourage other students to participate next year."
Way to go Keira!
