Messages for Families from the Director and Board of Trustees

Letter to families from Director of Education Lisa Walsh

Dear AMDSB families,

As we close out a very unusual school year, I wanted to thank you for being our partners in education, for being patient, and for supporting your children with online learning where needed. Your dedication and adaptability has enabled us to continue on despite these challenges! I also want to publicly acknowledge our amazing staff - their creativity, commitment and flexibility formed the backbone which enabled us to get through this together.

I am aware that some families experienced more challenges than others. Some students were unable to fully engage in online learning and we are developing plans and strategies to address the potential gaps they may have in the year ahead. There are also summer learning opportunities for secondary students and limited options for a select group of elementary students.

In September, we expect schools to look similar to this year with health and safety protocols in place and similar class sizes. We expect that the vast majority of students will be returning face to face, which is what we believe is best for student academic and social well-being. We do not anticipate many changes for our elementary students and we are finalizing the details for our secondary students. Our secondary face to face model, will be a Modified Semester model meaning that students will take all 4 courses for the length of the semester, alternating weeks with 2 classes each day per week (i.e. Week 1- Course A in a.m. and Course B in p.m.; Week 2- Course C in a.m. and Course D in p.m.). Full details will be announced later this summer.

For those students and families who are more comfortable in the online learning environment at this time, we will also be offering a remote learning school. In elementary, students will be enrolled in the Avon Maitland Remote Learning School (AMRLS). In secondary, students will remain enrolled in their home school but depending on their grade, take a combination of synchronous courses (online with a teacher) through AMRLS and asynchronous courses through Avon Maitland District E-learning Centre (AMDEC) (on their own time).

I want you to know that we will be ready. We will be receiving more details from the Ministry of Education this summer and we will communicate this information to families later in August. Our priority remains engaging our students in their learning, while supporting their mental health and well-being and social development.

Please enjoy a restful summer - you deserve it! Embrace the beautiful weather and make the most of your time with family and friends (in a COVID friendly way of course). We look forward to welcoming students back in September!

Sincerely,

Letter to families from the AMDSB Board of Trustees

As the 2020/21 school year comes to an end, the Board of Trustees of the Avon Maitland District School Board would like to express our sincere gratitude to our students, staff and Director. You demonstrated IAM Prepared, IAM Well, and IAM Engaged. The dynamic intersections between the 3 areas of our Strategic Plan were evident this year.

Our students have shown continual resiliency, determination and patience during a trying year. We are inspired by the dedication of our learners, their positivity and their commitment to their education, despite the challenging circumstances of Covid-19. We wish to recognize the parents and caregivers of our students for your unending patience and support. We know this has been an unparalleled experience and we are grateful to each of you for continuing to encourage and support our students.

Our heartfelt thanks to the extraordinary AMDSB staff across the district. Our collective staff, in all roles, have been simply incredible. They have been unfailing in their efforts and dedication to ensure our schools and students were safe and our students well supported while continuing to create learning environments that were innovative and inspiring. We are grateful to each and every one of you.

We want to publicly acknowledge our Director of Education, Dr. Lisa Walsh. Her dedicated leadership ensured our system and organization was well prepared to navigate a public health crisis. We are exceedingly grateful to Dr. Walsh for her exemplary guidance and commitment to the Avon Maitland District School Board.
