Tips on Improving School Attendance

There are several things that parents can do to promote regular attendance:

  • First and foremost, communicate the importance of regular daily attendance to your child.
  • Set the expectation that your child(ren) attends school every day. It’s their job!
  • Be proactive. Parents know their child(ren) best. If you, as a parent, notice changes in your child(ren)’s behaviour, talk to them. Tell them about the changes that you’ve observed and express your concerns. Be prepared to listen and validate their feelings. Connect with the school staff to share the concerns and request support, if needed.
  • Whenever possible, schedule vacations and medical appointments outside of regular school hours.
  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
