Board Meeting Highlights - September 28, 2021
Welcome Back AMDSB Students!!
AMDSB schools have been thrilled to welcome back students over the last three weeks. A variety of engaging pictures have been posted on social media to give families and the community a glimpse into the excitement that back to school has brought this year. Welcome back students!!!
National Truth and Reconciliation Week (NTRW)
This week AMDSB schools are acknowledging National Truth and Reconciliation Week, and, on September 30, Orange Shirt Day. The Communications Team is releasing a variety of social media posts to acknowledge the week/day and to raise awareness about the variety of national resources that are available. In addition, board staff (led by the Indigenous Education lead Monique Pregent) have developed staff resources so that teachers can discuss the significance of the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada with students in an age-appropriate way.
Terry Fox Run
Schools across the District celebrated Terry Fox over the last two weeks. Students learned more about Terry and his contributions to cancer research. A variety of activities were hosted in schools that included fundraisers and neighbourhood walks/runs.
Superintendent Creery presented an overview of the elementary Summer Learning Program. The program was offered virtually to Grade 3 students and focused on Literacy, Numeracy, and Well-being. Educators focused on activities that engaged students in unique ways (e.g. Choose Your Own Adventure writing activities), highlighted the importance of mental well-being by promoting "You Matter," and used a variety of online resources (e.g. Jamboards, games, chats) so that students participated in different ways. The feedback survey showed that students enjoyed the program and staff witnessed improvements in engagement and academic outcomes.
Chair Hunking reported that he had the pleasure (along with Director Walsh) of attending the Elementary Teachers' Foundation of Ontario (ETFO) retirement celebration in Seaforth. On October 19 the Board is participating in a professional development session that examines their self-evaluation process.
Senior Staff Updates
Staff Vaccination Attestation
Superintendent Langis provided an update on the aggregate data that has been collected by Human Resource Services. He reported that as of today, 91.1% of AMDSB staff are fully vaccinated. This information is updated every Wednesday on the board's COVID-19 Information and Advisory page.
Return to Athletics
Superintendent Langis reported that a document was released by the Huron Perth Athletics Association (AMDSB and Huron Perth Catholic District School Board) last week outlining the details of guidelines for a safe return to inter-school sports for students.
Vice Chair Geddes brought forward a motion to send a letter to the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Huron Perth Public Health advocating for mandatory vaccination for students (that are eligible) wishing to participate in extra-curricular activities. This motion was passed.
