Students Lead Virtual You Matter 2 Event to Close out the School Year

Screenshot from You Matter 2 event - student faces at the top and slide show in the middle Communications Manager Chera Longston (on behalf of Superintendent Marotta) highlighted the success of the final student-led You Matter wrap-up event. It was well attended by students and at least one staff member from all AMDSB schools.
The event demonstrated the importance of strong community partnerships and the Mental Health and Well-being (MHWB) team appreciates the relationship with Rural Response for Healthy Children and the Tanner Steffler Foundation. Schools were able to showcase their MHWB projects and provide feedback to AMDSB staff about what they see as next steps. Researchers from Queen's and Western Universities will be sharing the student feedback in order to inform next school year's work.
The student leaders had the goal of reducing stigma around MHWB and improving awareness of resources available in the community. They were certainly successful in that goal!
Before the year ends, the MHWB team is hosting Dr. Michael Ungar who will provide a free presentation for parents to give tips for coming through the pandemic with resilience. The event occurs on June 16 at 7 p.m. Finally, the MHWB team is creating resources for parents that will be released late August when students are preparing to return to school.

Although the event had to move to a virtual format, the organizers were able to host 4 professional authors. They presented to 55 classes across grades K to 8, to reach just over 1100 students. One Grade 2 student who joined author/illustrator Sydney Smith from Halifax recreated all 3 of the drawings that Mr. Smith presented and commented: "I love painting. It calms me down."
