Board Meeting Highlights - June 8, 2021
Students Lead Virtual You Matter 2 Event to Close out the School Year
Communications Manager Chera Longston (on behalf of Superintendent Marotta) highlighted the success of the final student-led You Matter wrap-up event. It was well attended by students and at least one staff member from all AMDSB schools.
The event demonstrated the importance of strong community partnerships and the Mental Health and Well-being (MHWB) team appreciates the relationship with Rural Response for Healthy Children and the Tanner Steffler Foundation. Schools were able to showcase their MHWB projects and provide feedback to AMDSB staff about what they see as next steps. Researchers from Queen's and Western Universities will be sharing the student feedback in order to inform next school year's work.
The student leaders had the goal of reducing stigma around MHWB and improving awareness of resources available in the community. They were certainly successful in that goal!
Before the year ends, the MHWB team is hosting Dr. Michael Ungar who will provide a free presentation for parents to give tips for coming through the pandemic with resilience. The event occurs on June 16 at 7 p.m. Finally, the MHWB team is creating resources for parents that will be released late August when students are preparing to return to school.
Alice Munro Festival of the Short Story for Kids Goes Virtual!
Trustee Schenk highlighted the Alice Munro Festival which aims to nurture
young readers and writers through a storytelling event. It was hosted in partnership with the Foundation for Education Perth Huron. Although the event had to move to a virtual format, the organizers were able to host 4 professional authors. They presented to 55 classes across grades K to 8, to reach just over 1100 students. One Grade 2 student who joined author/illustrator Sydney Smith from Halifax recreated all 3 of the drawings that Mr. Smith presented and commented: "I love painting. It calms me down."
A statement has been issued on behalf of the Board (and the Director) that acknowledges the tragic hate-motivated crime that killed 4 members of a London, Ontario Muslim family and left another in hospital. Read the full statement here.
Student Trustee Update
Vice Principal Eveline Wright (Student Trustee Staff support) introduced Abigail Peel as the new Student Trustee for the 2021-2022 school year. Abigail will join Elizabeth Benoit. Chair Hunking thanked the outgoing Student Trustee Makenzie Hallam and wished her (and other outgoing Student Senators) the best of luck in their future endeavours.

Superintendent Langis, along with Principal Marie McDade presented an update on the Emerging Leaders Development Program, the Mentoring Support Program for new Administrators, and a new process for communicating changes in Administrators.
