Winter Weather and School Closure Update - November 20, 2020

November 20, 2020

Dear AMDSB Families,

This letter is to provide information about school bus cancellations and school closures that could occur during the 2020/2021 school year. School bus cancellations are the decision of the bus companies while school building closures are the decision of the school and the Avon Maitland District School Board.

This winter, school closure decisions are impacted significantly by the COVID-19 pandemic. Public Health guidelines require that the mixing of cohorts should be limited as much as possible. In the past, combining students was a strategy often used on “snow days” when not all students and staff are able to get to school.

In order to prioritize the health and safety of our students and staff, the following plans are being put into place for the remainder of the 2020/2021 school year.

Plans for JK-6, JK-8 and 7-8 Schools

Schools will do their best to remain open when buses are not running. When the school building is closed to students, students should login to Google Classroom at the usual start of the school day to receive instructions from their classroom teacher. Students who do not have access to appropriate technology are asked to follow up with their teacher upon their return to school. We are working on a plan to allow students to borrow technology for short-term use.

Plans for 7-12 and 9-12 Schools

Based on the public health requirement to limit the mixing of cohorts, and the amount of material delivered in one day under the current secondary model, when buses are cancelled, Grade 7-12 and 9-12 school buildings will be closed to students. Learning will shift to online, so on these days, students should login to Google Classroom at the usual start of the school day to receive instructions from their classroom teacher.  Students who do not have access to appropriate technology are asked to follow up with their teacher upon their return to school. We are working on a plan to allow students to borrow technology for short-term use.

Plans for Remote Learning school (AMRLS, AMDEC)

This does not impact these students, learning continues as usual.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate this unusual school year. We will do our very best to keep families informed.
